Zill's Dark (Eugenia Uniflora)

$35.00

This is considered to be one of the best tasting in the eugenia family. Here is some information that i found from the man who named the plant.

Someone at the nursery doing the tag printing switched to "Black Surinam Cherry", even though this variety is very obviously not one of those which actually have black color.  It is really very dark purple or blackish-red.

It was selected by Dorothy Zill, who suggested that I save it, when she saw that I was digging up other Surinam-cherries to save when the old nursery was sold to developers.  I named it 'Zill Dark.'

Zill's Dark Surinam cherry offers a unique and bold flavor that blends sweet, tangy, and slightly tart notes. The taste is rich, with an initial burst of sweetness followed by a refreshing tartness that gives it a lively, almost wine-like quality. The fruit's flesh is juicy and succulent, with a slightly resinous undertone that adds complexity. There’s a hint of earthy, almost herbal flavor alongside the fruity sweetness, which gives it a distinct character. It’s a flavor that’s both bold and nuanced, making it an exciting addition to tropical fruit experiences.

Produces prolific amounts of cherry-sized fruits which can be eaten raw or used in beverages and desserts. Hardy to the mid 20's (F), and occasionally lower. Excellent for container culture.
