Luc's Garcina var. Laranja (Garcinia sp. "Mexican Mangosteen" Seeds
This is the toughest of all Garcinias and also the hardest to get. A man named Luc Vilarekker first grew these somewhere in Mexico and the seeds I got came from the same place. I believe that Kevin Klopf also has some of these seeds started and hopefully we can get these hardy plants acclimated to New Orleans.
I have tasted the Achachairu which is most often brought up as a comparison to Luc’s. To me it tasted like a bigger version of lemondrop mangosteen, a Lemonhead candy flavor. This is what Steve from Anderson Tropicals says about his experience:
Luc's Garcinia var. Laranja (Garcinia sp. "Mexican Mangosteen") Seeds
Luc's Garcinia is within a genus of tropical trees and shrubs known for its fruit like mangosteen, which is often referred to as the "queen of fruits." These trees produce a wide variety of fruits that are popular in different parts of the world, both for their unique taste and potential health benefits.
This species is bullet proof, takes hot, cold, drought, trunk damage, anything that you throw at it. Flavor is sweet with a nice acid element like lemon gelato.
As the name would suggest, this variety in particular is gigantic.
These are the orange fruits instead of the regular yellow ones; I was able to get some fruits, they have an excellent taste, while the regular yellow can be totally sweet when fully ripe this Orangey ones have a stronger flavor, very sweet, but also with a bit of tart all around, 90% sweet 10% tart. Another difference is the skin keeps thick like Achachairu instead of became thin tomato type like regular yellow ones. Even though it is thick, the skin is edible and crunchy, and the flesh is also of a deeper color of the yellow one.
